This one’s kind of flown under the radar in light of a lot of higher profile character reboots at DC over the past year, but over the past few months, the comics company has introduced at least one really cool new character- Garbage Man. Yes, he’s a man made totally out of garbage, a scenario that in more cynical hands could be played for laughs, but Aaron Lopresti, the character’s creator, has chosen to play Garbage Man’s story fairly straight in the Frankenstein/Swamp Thing tradition- particularly Swamp Thing, an obvious inter-company forebear to Garbage Man. Anyway, he’s man and monster in one, an immediate castoff from society because of his looks, a potential menace to all because of his strength, and yet his heart and mind are still human and not out to hurt anyone- anyone good, anyway (except maybe when he decks Batman). I think there’s certainly a little bit of Garbage Man in all of his, feeling disgusting on the outside, feeling like others view us as a monster, but still retaining our humanity within, wanting to prove to the world that’s we’re deserving of compassion and love. While I had little hope for a Garbage Man ongoing series, I’ve really enjoyed what I’ve read of him in Weird Worlds and My Greatest Adventure, and sincerely hope DC doesn’t let this character just fall by the wayside. He’s really something interesting, something special, and a character deserving of future stories and experiences within the DC Universe.
